FAFSA for MRI Programs - Complete Guide
Can you use FAFSA for MRI school? The answer depends entirely on whether your school is Title IV-eligible. Here's how to find out and what to do either way.
Most Important Thing to Know
FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) only works at Title IV-eligible schools. Many vocational MRI programs are NOT Title IV-eligible. Before assuming you can use FAFSA, ask the school directly: "Are you a Title IV-eligible institution?" Then verify on studentaid.gov.
What FAFSA Can Do (at eligible schools)

Step-by-Step: Filing FAFSA
1
Create your FSA ID
Go to studentaid.gov and create an FSA ID (Federal Student Aid ID). You'll use this every year to access and submit your FAFSA. Your parent(s) may also need their own FSA ID if they're contributing.
2
Gather required documents
Social Security Number, driver's license, prior year tax returns (yours and parents' if dependent), bank statements, W-2 forms. The FAFSA now uses the IRS Direct Data Exchange to pull tax data automatically.
3
Complete the FAFSA at studentaid.gov
Fill out your FAFSA online. Include the school code for your MRI program so the school can receive your financial aid information. Submit as early as possible - aid is often awarded on a first-come, first-served basis.
4
Receive your Student Aid Report (SAR)
After submitting, you'll receive a SAR summarizing your FAFSA. Review it for errors. Your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) / Student Aid Index (SAI) determines aid eligibility.
5
Review your Financial Aid Award
The school will send a financial aid award letter showing grants, loans, and work-study offered. Compare total net cost after aid across any schools you're considering.
6
Accept aid and complete entrance counseling
If accepting loans, complete federal loan entrance counseling and sign a Master Promissory Note (MPN) at studentaid.gov.
What If My MRI School Isn't FAFSA-Eligible?
Many strong MRI programs are not Title IV-eligible. Your options include:
Institutional payment plans: Many vocational MRI schools offer in-house payment plans that spread tuition over the program length. Ask specifically if interest is charged. Payment plans guide →
Cal Grant (income-eligible CA residents): If attending a California-approved school, you may qualify for Cal Grant regardless of FAFSA. Check at csac.ca.gov.
Private student loans: Available from banks, credit unions, and lenders like Sallie Mae and Earnest. Rates and terms vary - compare carefully and borrow only what you need.
Employer tuition reimbursement: Many CA hospital systems offer tuition reimbursement for employees entering MRI training. Check your current employer's education benefits.
Scholarships: ASRT, ARRT Foundation, and healthcare scholarships don't require Title IV eligibility. Scholarships guide →
