California MRI Licensing & CDPH Requirements
California requires state recognition through the CDPH Radiologic Health Branch to practice as an MRI technologist - separate from (and in addition to) your national certification.
Critical: Two Separate Steps
To legally practice MRI in California, you need: (1) a national certification (ARRT MRI or ARMRIT) AND (2) California CDPH state recognition. These are separate applications with separate fees and timelines. Completing one doesn't automatically grant the other.
About the CDPH Radiologic Health Branch
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Radiologic Health Branch is the state agency that oversees the licensing and regulation of radiologic technologists in California, including MRI technologists. They administer the Certified Radiologic Technologist (CRT) certificate program.
Before you can work as an MRI tech in California - even on a provisional basis - you must have either California state recognition or be operating under a valid California permit. Practicing without recognition or a permit is a violation of California law.
How to Apply for California State Recognition
Pass your national exam
Complete your ARMRIT or ARRT MRI exam successfully. You'll receive documentation of your certification from the relevant credentialing body.
Obtain the CDPH application
Access the application at the CDPH Radiologic Health Branch website. Verify the current application form and requirements - these are updated periodically.
Gather required documents
Typically includes: proof of national certification, proof of MRI education (diploma/transcript), application fee, passport-style photo, and possibly fingerprinting for background check.
Submit and wait
Processing times vary. CDPH does not guarantee specific processing timelines. Factor in several weeks to months. You may be able to practice under a temporary permit while your full application is processed - verify with CDPH.
Application Fees
Application fees change periodically. Do not rely on any third-party source (including this site) for current fee amounts. Verify all current fees directly at the CDPH Radiologic Health Branch website.
Renewal Requirements
California CRT recognition requires periodic renewal. Both your national certification (ARRT or ARMRIT) and your California state recognition must be kept current. Continuing education (CE) requirements apply to both. Verify current renewal periods and CE requirements directly with CDPH and your national credentialing body.
Out-of-State MRI Techs Moving to California
If you are already ARRT- or ARMRIT-certified in another state and moving to California, you must still apply for California state recognition before practicing. Contact the CDPH Radiologic Health Branch for guidance on the endorsement process.
