What is ARMRIT?

ARMRIT stands for the American Registry of Magnetic Resonance Imaging Technologists. Unlike ARRT's MRI post-primary credential, ARMRIT is a standalone certification - it doesn't require a prior radiologic technology credential or degree. This makes it the most accessible pathway to MRI certification for career changers and new healthcare entrants.

ARMRIT has been credentialing MRI technologists since 1985. The credential is accepted by hospitals and outpatient imaging centers throughout California and in 40+ states nationwide.

Requirements for ARMRIT Certification

1.
Educational Prerequisite: High school diploma or GED. Some ARMRIT-based programs also require prerequisite college coursework (anatomy, biology). Verify with your specific program.
2.
Accredited MRI Program: Complete an ARMRIT-recognized MRI training program. The program provides both didactic education and supervised clinical rotations.
3.
Clinical Hours: Document the required number of supervised clinical hours at an approved clinical site. Typical requirement: 750–1,000+ hours. Verify current requirements at armrit.org.
4.
Pass the ARMRIT Exam: The ARMRIT written examination covers MRI physics, patient safety, anatomy, scan protocols, and image quality.

ARMRIT in California

ARMRIT is accepted by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Radiologic Health Branch as a valid credential for MRI practice in the state. After passing the ARMRIT exam, you apply for California state recognition through CDPH to legally practice as an MRI technologist in California.

California hospitals, outpatient imaging centers (including large chains like RadNet), and mobile MRI companies all hire ARMRIT-certified technologists. When interviewing for positions, confirm the employer's credential preferences, but in our experience, ARMRIT is broadly accepted across the California market.

ARMRIT vs ARRT: The Choice Simplified

Choose ARMRIT if you're entering MRI from outside the radiology field. No prior credential required, fastest route (12–18 months), fully accepted in California.

Choose ARRT MRI if you already hold an ARRT primary credential (like Radiologic Technology) and want to add MRI as a specialty. The ARRT route builds on your existing credential and may be preferred by some academic medical centers.
