How We Compare MRI Schools
Our methodology is public, detailed, and applied equally to every school - whether or not a compensation arrangement exists.
Why Methodology Transparency Matters
Most MRI school comparison sites are secretly lead-generation platforms for one school. Their "rankings" are marketing dressed as editorial. We think that's a disservice to people making a real financial and career commitment.
Our comparisons use 8 objective criteria applied consistently to every program we evaluate. We publish this methodology so you can hold us accountable - and so you can use the same criteria yourself when evaluating schools we haven't covered yet.
The 8 Scoring Criteria
Accreditation & Regulatory Recognition
We check whether the program holds recognized accreditation and whether graduates qualify for national certification (ARRT or ARMRIT) and California state recognition (CDPH). An unaccredited program that doesn't lead to a certifiable credential is a red flag regardless of other factors.
Credential Pathway Supported (ARRT / ARMRIT)
We clearly identify which certification pathway each program supports. ARMRIT programs are accessible without a prior radiology credential; ARRT post-primary programs require an existing ARRT credential. This single factor dramatically affects who is eligible and how long the path takes.
Program Length & Schedule Flexibility
Total program length in weeks/months, plus whether evening, weekend, or hybrid schedules are available. For students who need to work while in school, schedule flexibility can be decisive.
Cost & Financial Aid Availability
Total tuition plus fees, plus what financial aid options are available (FAFSA eligibility, payment plans, institutional grants, employer partnerships). We look at net cost, not just sticker price.
Clinical Placement & Site Access
The quantity, quality, and geographic accessibility of clinical training sites. A program that can't place you in clinical rotations near where you live adds hidden costs and logistical burden. We look at the number and types of affiliated clinical sites.
Student Support & Outcomes Transparency
Does the school publish first-time exam pass rates? Employment rates? Median salary of graduates? Schools that transparently share outcomes demonstrate confidence in their program. We reward transparency and flag programs that refuse to share outcome data.
Location & Commute Accessibility
Physical campus location, parking and transit access, and proximity to clinical sites. In Southern California's traffic environment, commute burden is a real factor in student completion rates.
Communication & Admissions Transparency
Responsiveness to prospective students' questions, clarity of the admissions process, honest representation of start dates and waitlists, and willingness to answer hard questions about cost and outcomes before enrollment.

| ARRT Certification Requirements | ARRT.org - official candidate handbook | When ARRT updates |
| ARMRIT Certification Requirements | ARMRIT.org - official candidate guide | When ARMRIT updates |
| California Licensing (CDPH) | CDPH Radiologic Health Branch official site | When CDPH updates |
| School-Specific Data (tuition, length, etc.) | Official school catalogs and admissions pages | Quarterly verification |
| Job Outlook | BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook | Biennially |
Update Cadence
Salary and BLS data is refreshed annually when new BLS figures are released. School-specific data (tuition, program length, accreditation status) is verified quarterly. Each page displays a "Last verified" date. If we can't confirm a number is current, we mark it with a tag and recommend you confirm directly with the school.
Sponsored Placements
Some schools pay for featured placement on this site. These appear above organic editorial rankings and are labeled Featured. A featured placement does not change the school's editorial score or the content of its pros/cons summary - it only affects position relative to other schools.
